Cat5e is the most commonly used category of data cable used today in commercial networks. Cat5e data cabling supports networking at Gigabit Ethernet speeds (up to 1000 Mbps) over short distances by utilizing all four wire pairs, and it is backward-compatible with ordinary Cat5. Cat5e is available as U-UTP, F-UTP and SF-UTP.

Cat5e supports rapid data transfer and services including, voice (VoIP), video conferencing, IP CCTV and access control systems. For environments requiring faster data transfer rates, for example in a data centre, or where longer-term future-proofing is required within the organisation, Cat6a and Cat7 and optical fibre data cabling is a more suitable option for horizontal cabling.
